Policies and Initiatives

eFit Austria

eFit Austria was an initiative of the former Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture from 2001 to 2007. It promoted the sustained use of new information and communication technologies in the areas of education, science and culture. eFit was an open platform for projects and initiatives to pursue this aim.

eFit emphasised the following issues: eEducation, eScience, eTraining, eCulture, and eAdministration. The initiative hosted an eLearning portal and supported the development of relevant infrastructure.

The issue eCulture

The presentation of the digitised cultural heritage objects by memory organisations via the eCulture scheme was a central objective of the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture.
The main cultural policy aims for digitisation were:

  • Provision of a critical mass of digital resources that meet existing and future usage patterns and demands (strategies for digital resources)
  • Knowledge transfer to disadvantaged institutions, as well as the strengthening of the regional position of libraries, museums, and cultural organisations(measures of regional development)
  • Optimise the access to digital resources (policy of access)
  • Promote the target group specific use of contents(usage policy)
  • Measures to open up the cultural heritage, including the realisation of the economic potential (exploitation policy)
  • Preservation of cultural heritage for future access (preservation policy)
